After you get married, don’t forget to update important documents. It is recommended that you take care of the following matters as soon as possible after marriage:
1. Update Wills, Trusts and Powers of Attorney.
2. Bank and Brokerage Statements – Check the titling of accounts. The titling of these accounts will supersede your Will where there is conflict.
3. Insurance Policies – Review amount of coverage, ownership and beneficiary designations.
4. Social Security – Update death benefit beneficiaries and next-of-kin designations.
5. Review titling for Deeds and other real estate documents.
6. Review pensions, IRA’s, annuities and other retirement accounts. Update beneficiaries.
7. Review non-monetary designations and health care proxies. Update emergency contact information.
8. Review and update business and ownership documents and associated insurance policies.
Be aware that second marriages create unique estate concerns particularly when there are children from a previous relationship for whom you may have concerns about their inheritance prospects by your new marriage. Wills, Deeds, Powers of Attorney and asset beneficiary designations should be reviewed with these concerns in mind.
